CONSERVATION IN ACTION

In Kenya, conservation and tourism go hand in hand. The Safari & Conservation Company (SCC) emphasises preserving the conservation landscape and expanding efforts wherever possible. Tourism plays a vital role in this mission, and we invite you to join us in creating a better world for future generations.

The 1+1 = 2 Protect Program, implemented by SCC, is unique in its approach. Unlike other travel companies, SCC offers every guest the opportunity to contribute to conservation efforts. Through this program, guests can choose to pay an additional 1% of their safari cost, with SCC matching that 1%, resulting in a total contribution of 2% towards a conservation project of their choice. Each contribution, whether through direct initiatives or supporting local communities, plays a crucial role in safeguarding Kenya and Africa’s natural heritage for current and future generations.

Our goal is to encourage sustainable tourism by giving travellers the opportunity to make a difference whilst on holiday.

OUR HISTORY IN CONSERVATION

Both the Dyer and Robert’s families have a long history of conservation and have been involved in setting up conservancies, initiating wildlife projects, and supporting local communities.

Andy Roberts

Andy Roberts is actively involved with Manda Bay and its wildlife conservation and has assisted his son Angus Roberts in establishing the Ocean Trust at Manda Bay, a coral reef regeneration project in the Indian Ocean Region.

Fuzz Dyer

The Dyer family have invested in giving the wildlife the space it needs and transforming Borana from a livestock ranch into a wildlife conservancy.

Fuzz Dyer established a Rhino Sanctuary on Lewa Downs in collaboration with Ian Craig, which now encompasses the whole of Lewa and Borana into Rhino habitat. Fuzz’s involvement in the running of Borana and other neighbouring conservancies continues, and his advice is sought on initiatives and ideas.

Moreover, Bimbi’s efforts in supporting the local community through the creation and sale of leather and beaded goods uplift local economies and foster sustainable livelihoods within the region.

Willy Roberts

In the Masai Mara, Andy’s Late brother, Willy Roberts, facilitated the establishment of privately owned community lands in key wildlife areas, starting with the first conservancy in the Mara. This model has since been replicated across the Serengeti and Mara ecosystem, significantly impacting conservation efforts.

His final legacy, Sirikoi Lodge,  was created with his wife Sue, and is renowned as one of Kenya’s most beautiful lodges.

Richard Roberts

Willy and Sue’s late Son Richard and his partner Liz, who have a beautiful private camp, Richards Camp, in the Mara, founded the Mara Elephant Project in 2011, which is instrumental in human-wildlife conflict mitigation and anti-poaching through the collaring, monitoring and tracking of elephants. With a dedicated team, MEP is achieving great results in reducing elephant poaching.

Caro Roberts

In Lake Baringo, home of the Roberts family, Caroline, Willy & Sue’s daughter, and her husband Ross, who have a small exclusive island retreat – Samatian Island, helped NRT negotiate with the local tribespeople of Baringo to set up a small community conservancy on the eastern shores of Lake Baringo and the subsequent re- introduction of Rothschild Giraffe, once endemic to the area.

Murray Roberts

Also, in the Baringo area, Andy’s older brother Murray and wife Elizabeth founded and manage the Rehabilitation of Arid Environments trust (RAE) and have worked with the Pokot and Njemps communities on rangeland management and how to re-generate land overgrazed by livestock.  Elizabeth also runs an outpatient clinic for women and children – being an expert on burns which is commonplace in the villages.
